Our Learning
Delivering a challenging and engaging curriculumPromoting British Values
At Larkspur Primary Academy, we are committed to serving our community and recognize the multi-cultural, multi faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom. We work to ensure that individuals or groups are free from discrimination regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar.
Our school values of CARE, RESPECT, HONESTY, RESPONSIBILITY, DETERMINATION and APPRECIATION underpin everything we do. Along with these, the British Values of DEMOCRACY, THE RULE OF LAW, INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY, MUTUAL RESPECT and TOLERANCE OF THOSE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS AND BELIEFS are embedded within our school.
Here are some examples of how our school and British values are shared:
Curriculum
Our curriculum prepares children for life in British Society; this includes developing the understanding and use of money, effective reading and writing skills, collaboration and discussion to research ideas and concepts. Curriculum themes include historical and geographical study in the context of the United Kingdom as well as national and international comparisons. Our children are also given a democratic ‘voice’ in how the National Curriculum skills and concepts are taught through our Creative Curriculum approach.
Assemblies
Our assembly themes uphold and promote our core and British values and children are asked to reflect on related key messages such as care, respect, tolerance, honesty and gratitude.
PSHE
Respect is also taught within our PSHE lessons where pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms. Our E-Safety lessons and PSHE work on keeping safe promotes the rule of law and individual liberty. We promote care through our regular support of charitable causes such as collecting for food banks during Harvest Festival and providing choir performances for local groups.
RE
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs is promoted in RE as children gain a greater understanding of different religions. Planning for RE is directed by the Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) – Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. We have excellent links with the local church groups.
PE
Promotion of the concept of “fair play”, following and developing rules, celebrating and rewarding success, accepting defeat and participating in activities that promote cooperation with others and inclusion for all form an integral part of our PE curriculum.
School Council
Larkspur promotes democratic processes through the election of representatives for our School Council. This fosters the concept of freedom of speech and group action to address need and concerns. Ivy Learning Trust Parliament also allows children across the trust to have a voice.
